Flight ban ruins Ulster couple’s Mexico wedding

A couple from Northern Ireland have had their hopes of a dream wedding dashed by the  Herve Leger Sale outbreak of swine flu in Mexico.

Davina McKee and James McKergan had hoped that their families would be swapping Ulster’s north coast for the central American country to witness them exchanging their vows next week.

But there will be just the two of them now after they travelled out a week ago — their parents wedding dressesand family can’t make it as they are marooned back home because of the ban on flights to the country which has been ravaged by swine flu cases.

Davina’s mum and dad Kenneth and Vera, and James’ parents Alastair and Sandra — plus two family friends — had booked their flights to follow the happy couple out this weekend for Wednesday’s ceremony.

But with all flights to Mexico cancelled, the families will have to depend on photographs and videos to view the wedding in a hotel in the world-famous holiday resort of Cancun.

Alastair said: “Obviously we’re very disappointed at not being able to make it. We were looking forward to a holiday and being there at the wedding.

“We’ll be worried that they may catch swine flu in a place that obviously doesn’t have the NHS that we do. But they are well away from Mexico City where most cases seem to be, and we’ll be on the phone wishing them all the best.”

The bride and groom, who both live in Portstewart, plan to have a blessing on their marriage at the town’s Custom DressesChurch of Ireland when they return.

Family and friends will be there to wish them well — the blessing will take place on May 30 and be officiated by Rev David Fielding.

“But we’d all love to have been in Cancun for the real thing,” Alastair added.
